Thousands of families relocate to Dubai every year — zero income tax, 300 sunny days, exceptional safety and world-class international schools. Here are the essentials.
Why Dubai attracts so many expat families
Dubai is home to over 3.5 million people, more than 90% of whom are expatriates from 200+ nationalities. Zero personal income tax means your salary is fully net. Add competitive salaries, modern infrastructure, and a location midway between Europe, Asia and Africa.
- Zero personal income tax
- 200+ private international schools supervised by the KHDA
- World-class private healthcare
- Strategic location: 7 hours from New York, hub to Asia and Africa
Visa and residency: what you need to know
The Emirates ID is your most important document — without it you cannot open a bank account, rent a home or enrol your children in school. Allow 2–4 weeks to obtain it after arrival.
- Employment Visa: employer-sponsored, 2-3 years — most common
- Golden Visa 5 or 10 years: investors and talented professionals
- Green Visa: qualified freelancers and self-employed (since 2022)
- Mandatory medical exam before visa is issued
Housing: choosing your neighbourhood
Annual leases paid by post-dated cheques (2–4 per year). A 2-bedroom apartment costs AED 80,000–130,000/year. Budget also for a 5% security deposit and 5% agency fee.
- Jumeirah: villas, near international schools, quiet
- Dubai Marina: high-rise apartments, sea views, vibrant
- JLT: great value, diverse community
- Arabian Ranches: gated community, ideal for families
Children’s education
Top school places are reserved 12–18 months in advance. Check KHDA ratings at khda.ae before choosing.
- GEMS Wellington Academy: KHDA Outstanding, British Curriculum
- GEMS World Academy: Full IB (PYP + MYP + Diploma)
- Lycée Georges Pompidou: French AEFE, accredited Baccalauréat
