Living in the UAE without understanding Emirati culture means missing what really matters. Here are 10 essential keys.
1. Ramadan: a legal matter, not just a custom
Eating, drinking or smoking in public during fasting hours is a legal offence. Attend an Iftar dinner — it is an unforgettable experience open to all.
2. Hospitality (Diafa): always accept
Always accept Arabic coffee (Qahwa) and dates when offered. Gently shake the cup to signal you are done. Say Shukran (thank you).
3. Dress code
Public spaces and shopping malls: shoulders and knees covered. Fines can be issued. Mosques: full coverage and remove shoes.
4. Right hand, Inshallah, Wasta, Yalla
- Right hand: always give and receive with the right hand
- Inshallah: “God willing” — not a firm commitment
- Wasta: relational influence — nurture your contacts
- Yalla: “let’s go!” — a very common expression
5. The absolute rule: never criticise
Criticising the government, rulers or Islam — in person or on social media — is a serious criminal offence. Expats have been arrested and deported for Facebook posts.
